Hell, if it's flat you should be able to see the opposite shore of the great lakes with a telescope on a clear day even.

Well, you can sometimes if the weather is right. Due to refraction. The real issue is then why cant you always see Chicago from the dunes in lower Michigan and why can you only see the tops of the buildings not the bottoms.
