So why is the cop on the right (and possibly on the right too, under his shirt) wearing body armor and the defendant NOT wearing protection? If one cop (maybe two) thought it was prudent to wear body armor, why not protect the defendant too?

Because they need the optics. Did any fake news suggest wHItE SupRimesiStS (patriot front) where going to attack the police to free "their guy" from the two officers of collor?
