I think we sounded like a mix of Soundgarden, Radiohead, STP, The Police and with a dash of Elliott Smith thrown in (as odd as that sounds). We had developed a following and MCA signed us in 97' which was a pretty big label at the time. We were young (The guitar player and I were 22, the drummer was 21) but we had grown a lot as song writers and players. I played bass and sang which was a bit of a dream because Sting had been one of my rock idols growing up as a kid.
I don't know how far we would have gone. I had a very "common man" voice and I'm sure that would have held us back. Both the guitar player and I were married to two girls who were best friends and who did not like the idea of us touring. They both went off their birth control pills without telling us and shortly after we signed, we found out we were going to be fathers and that was intimidating enough at 22, let alone touring and the pressure of a major record contract. So we packed it in as far as the band was concerned. We didn't find out until years later what the wives did (both of which are ex-wives now).
But I got my boy out of the deal and we've been extremely close for 23 years to this day and I'd never change that. Best son a father could ever ask for and even now that he's moved out, he spends a couple hours with me every single night.
But I also can't ever stop wondering if we would have been successful. Ah well.
