Speaking to CBS News on Tuesday, Obama warned that the mainstream media has lost its control over the narrative and said the only solution is for the U.S. government to step in and take drastic action. âThe thing that Iâm most worried about is the degree to which we now have a divided conversation, in part because we have a divided media, right?â Obama told Nate Burleson. âIâm much older than you⌠when I was coming up, you had three TV stations and people were getting a similar sense of what is true and what isnât, what was real and what was not.â âToday, what Iâm most concerned about is because of the splintering of the media, we almost occupy different realities,â Obama said, adding âIf something happens, in the past, everybody could say, all right, we may disagree on how to solve it, but at least we all agree that, yeah, thatâs an issue.â âNow people will say, well, that didnât happen, or I donât believe that,â he complained, asserting that âone of, I think, the goals of the Obama Foundation, and one of the goals of my post-presidency, is how do we return to that common conversation? How can we have a common set of facts?â Obama went on to talk about gun control as an example of one issue he wants to see Americans accept a âcommon set of factsâ on. âWe may disagree on gun violence in terms of what the best prescriptions are, but we canât deny the data that says the United States has levels of gun violence that are 5, 10, 15 times more than other countries,â he stated, adding âSo if we say it is just a mental health problem, well, itâs not like there arenât people with mental health problems in those other countries. Whatâs the difference? This is probably the difference. Now, we can have a debate. But at least weâve agreed on some facts.â
