I live in a relatively low crime area. Our local Sam's club which is about 5 years old redid their front entrance.
All they did was add a string of concrete and steel poles. They had a few before that a car would not be able to get through. Now they removed the old poles and have maybe double and you can see they are much stronger.
It just seems really weird and unnecessary Are they getting ready for something?
Has anybody seen any unexplained security upgrades at big box stores near you?
If not then this is just a local thing. It could be possible that the old barriers were not installed correctly.
It seems like something like this would be one of the first concrete (no pun intended) indication that people in the know are getting ready for something we are not going to like.
I'm sure the reason for this move is twofold.
One, there are many thugs and pucks that would think nothing of heisting a car, truck, or even a semi and turning the club into a drive through.
Second, liability. There was a case not too long ago of a store that did not have these bollards, and in the course of the punk crashing the store, killed a person sitting outside the store. Stout bollards would have prevented this.
Now, if they were this diligent about customer service.
I've noticed at one Walmart they've started putting really expensive small items into locked plastic boxes, mostly in the health and cosmetics section. They put these somewhat expensive red eye drops in those boxes. I've not noticed the same thing in other Walmarts nearby though, so it seems certain areas are more prone to theft lately.
That's a localized issue. It's a pretty good hint to the crime stats of the area where the store is located.
An interesting version of this - in Hawaii, they put Spam cans in the plastic boxes, as theft of spam is a problem in their blue paradise, as it's used a lot and pretty durable, so has become a sort of black market currency.

Never thought Spam would be a prized commodity.
It's yuge in South Korea:

From what I understand the items locked away are not always expensive items. They are the items that are stolen most often.
Strange that red eye drops would be a high ticket item to steal, but who knows, maybe the junkies need to hide their addictions and red, bulging eyes with eye drops.
we had the same upgrade at our local sams here in Flint Michigan a few month ago.
I know that Carmax locations have constructed concrete barriers between the side doors and the car lot, and some locations will even park a vehicle just inside the main entrance to block access after hours. They told me that thieves would drive a vehicle right through the main entrance and then through the side entrance, destroying the doors and allowing them to drive vehicles back through the store and out into the main street. Crazy.
sam's, walmart, jade helm, get your tinfoil hat on it's a deep hole.
Yes totally agree! Fema holding areas…….
I’m seeing more and better constructed cattle management systems going into big box stores as well.
When they do get installed I will bring management over and ask them why are they putting in the cattle management system. Sometimes this gets a laugh. The answer is always the same. A shrug and pointing to an order from someone higher up the food chain.
I am lucky in that I have many choices of where to shop. I will avoid the cattle management systems as much as I can.
