I went to Mexico in 2013 and my flight was diverted to Guadalajara and then we were forced to return to LAX because this same volcano was spewing smoke causing a flying hazard that American carriers refused to risk. Ended up having to drive to TJ from LAX and then taking a Mexican flight (Volaris) further inland.
