No! Why? If they want a luxury like that they can damn well pay for it themselves.
If there is an emergency that is big enough that they can no longer communicate what do they think they can do and how will they get to DC anyway? Simple fix - if the SHTF either head to DC or head to a regional meet-up point previously designated. That's it. If the sat phones even work what would they use them for? "Hey Jim - what happened? OK I'll head towards the meeting place." Duh - they were gonna do that anyway, but by all means screw the taxpayers out of more money paying for phone bills that are outrageous and completely unnecessary.
The only people that should have these at taxpayers expense are the primaries - CJOTUS, POTUS/VPOTUS (USSS would have those anyway), SECDEF, SOTH, Senate Majority Leader, maybe the minority leaders in both houses, and the JCS and Combat Commanders.
If we don't limit who we give these to, they will be the next govt status symbol.
You are assuming that these phones would be used to order Uber eats…lol No. However, it makes more sense to me to plan ahead and everyone should have these phones just in case.
Do you know of these phone are shielded? No, we don’t. Do you know if any com satellites would be knocked out by an EMP? No, we don’t.
The government wastes so much money….I’d rather our elected officials have a backup comms device than giving that money to Zelinsky, etc…
And you're assuming there will be no bill with no use. Doesn't work that way.
And yeah - you don't think these entitled morons won't abuse it? They have a fund to pay off sexual abuse lawsuits.
Thanks for thinking about the EMPs - I thought about that but didn't mention it. If there is a nuclear EMP above the US these things won't work anyway. The article said it is recommended to keep the phones with them. I doubt they know about Faraday Bags. Half will forget to even charge the phones. Some of them still think islands can tip over with too much weight on one side.
I agree on Ukraine - zero money. No more. As for elected officials - I still see no reason for anyone other than the people I mentioned to have that kind of stuff. They can't do anything on their own, and in most cases I think most of us are happier when they aren't in session screwing things up. They can go meet in their designated areas and coordinate from there. Maybe have comms there to coordinate between the regions.
They can't get along with each other now. The last thing we need is for 600+ heroes individually telling people what to do when I wouldn't trust most of them to pick up milk from the store.
Nope I didn’t assume that at all…where did you get that? If it is abused….oh well, the cost of having such a bloated government…there are much bigger fish to fry, IMO. Even without faraday bags their satellite phones may be fine if they had enough built in shielding….
But again, I just think it would be prudent even though some like Fetterman would try to eat it.
