A massive explosion shocked the residents in the vicinity of Washington DC, echoing across nearby areas in Maryland and Virginia, Daily Mail reported.

It did not sound like a sonic boom. It felt like a distant explosion. I'm surprised at how far the sound and vibration travelled. Shook windows at the Smithsonian in Arlington AND Potomac Mills in Woodbridge.

Well from what I'm gathering, this is what happened:

The military scrambled multiple jets in response because they detected the plane going down and unresponsive.
