Why does Trump even need donations?

I thought the whole point of him already being rich meant that after entering office he was not beholden to the instructions of prior campaign donors.

It's one thing to maintain your life with what you've got. It's another to blow hundreds of millions on campaign expenses. Helping his people win elections isn't a bad thing.
