I don't know if this is an original thought, but what if the Q team were part of the UFO branch of the government? Would give them access to alien tech along with seriously deep classification to protect against the cabal.
Maybe they kept it secret not to protect the tech from us, but to keep it out of cabal hands until they could eliminate them as a threat.
