I don't know the origin of it enough to understand whether or not there's any validity, aside from the obvious fact our DNA is being damaged by modern life, but it always sounds like some New Age "we could be gods if only we weren't being held down by the elites" nonsense

Awakening is a good thing. Don't let dogma use the pejorative "New Age" in order to scare you away from God.
