That's the key right there. When you go to the store to make a purchase, what do you get? A paper receipt that tells you what you purchased, how much money you spent, and the amount of sales tax you paid. In other words, a record of your purchase.

Yes, I agree. It should state how you voted, and have a number that is attached to the ballot.
You want anonymous voting.
I suggest anonymous within group of 100 (or so)
and have a forensic tear --- to match to your receipt.
In other words --- I know I voted in lot 47 (100 per lot) and my tear looks like this (images posted online)
I can check my vote while staying anonymous.
I would have to sort through 100 tears to find mine.
serial numbers ≠ anonymous voting
ok, but only you would have the 'receipt', so not sure how anyone observing the voter rolls would match that number to yours, and therefore expose the anonymity. A numbered receipt would simply allow a voter to check owntheir vote, to see that it has not changed.
