Technically they didn't "fire" him. IMHO, it's more insidious than that. This is 100% purely about trying to keep him under their thumb through the election. Keep him silent. He's still "under contract", being paid. They've taken his show away. They think they own him b/c he still draws a paycheck from Fox. They want him silenced and not speaking to the masses like he's doing.
All of this is true, and one additional reason they want him silenced. If nobody hears about or from him for a whole year, it will damage his recognition as he will fade from memory of the media consuming public. In a way it's a career poison pill.
Tucker stays silent. A year later his contact with fox is not renewed and he can begin trying to get signed somewhere or restarting his media presence. But now it's been a year since anyone has heard from him publicly. He is a distant memory. His core viewing audience will almost certainly have found alternative people to listen to. Tucker will struggle to get signed somewhere else and won't be able to command the price he is able to charge just prior to fox news mothballing him.
They fired him. Now they want to silence him.

They broke his contract and have no choice but to honor his pay until the end of the contract.
Now they try to silence him even though Fox put out tweets about him right after, thus nullifying any silencing agreement.
