I really dislike when anyone, Democrats or Republicans try to compare the parties of the 1860s to today.
I get that people are tired of Republicans being called racists, so they put a big emphasis on Lincoln being a Republican.
But the Republicans of Lincoln's time did not share the same values as Republicans do today.
Unless you think creating the first Income Tax, the first Inheritance Tax, and creating even more government agencies like the USDA and the Secret Service and supporting centralized banking with the National Currency Act are things that represent the Republican party.
No, I'm not saying the parties "switched". I'm saying that the political parties of the 1860s are not the same as the parties today, simple as that. And it's silly to play identity politics with people that lived 160 years ago.
