Yeah ive worked with it... it's called femtosecond hologram or it's predassesor nanosecond hologram. It works by shooting layers into a prism of sorts where they collide into the air.
there is a major issue with that theory. Holograms don't and cannot cast shadows. They are "additive" they are made of light, and thus can only be seen when lighter than the environment around them. The planes cast shadows, and are darker than the sky. It would be impossible to do this with a hologram array. You would need matter.
