This feels like kayfabe. But maybe Russian military needs to purge some elements and this is a way to effect that?
That is not whats happening. What is happening is a power grab by different elements in the Russian elite and they need to dispose of everyone in their way. We have a number of factions here and they all want the real power.
Are the factions recognizable to external observers?
Hard to say. Wagner are seperate from the army but probably their most experienced fighters.
