The government in D.C. is a democracy. The United States is a republic. 2 different entities.

"United States", "US", "USA" are the corporate names for the fictional entity in the District of Columbia which is a democracy (for the elites).
"United States of America" is the Union of States which is a decentralized Constitutional Republic.
