Also I believe "Light" in those passages is in reference to Jesus coming into the world and darkness represents people who choose to continue living a life of sin even though the Light has come to mankind, particularly given the context around that curation. There are also Scripture passages about doing charitable acts in secret, so it is not imperative that we must make ourselves known while doing good deeds. But I'm more interested in a direct answer to my question than debating Scripture at the moment.
