"Check" as a verb has TWO primary definitions:
To examine (something) in order to determine its accuracy, quality, or condition, or to detect the presence of something.
e.g. "customs officers have the right to check all luggage"

BUT ALSO:
2. To stop or slow the progress of (something, typically something undesirable).
e.g. "efforts were made to check the disease"
Fact Checker?
One who examines 'facts' to determine their accuracy, validity, etc.
One who STOPS the facts from getting out there, from moving forward, from escaping
That's really what fact checkers are: #2. The weaponized propaganda agents mobilized in order to prevent facts and truth from reaching the public
Fact checkers used to be paid by the journalism industry to verify information way back when there was a semi-honest judiciary and what you put in print or on tape could be taken to either civil and criminal courts for legal remedy. That slowly evolved to what is now those same journalism outlets being able to LIE about anything they choose. With next to no legal remedy being available. So in a way they are still being "paid" by the same folks.
