The whole graduation "ceremony" is obviously a very religious cult procession that people take way too seriously. Think of all the other cults that dress up in ceremonial robes to do rituals. Same thing.

The early colleges and universities were all founded as religious institutions So I suspect graduation gowns which haven’t changed over the years reflect that. So it’s really not that surprising
