Which illustrates why term limits are a short-sighted, meme [non] solution to the real problem of corruption in our govt.
Term limits eliminate the very few good politicians in DC, as well as the the bad ones. And the problem with that is that bad politicians are just as likely to be replaced with more bad politicians because, on average, politicians suck. And, the good politicians are also likely to be replaced with bad politicians because, on average, politicians suck.
I agree, but we still need term limits. The longer the apple rots, the worse it gets. Piglosi is the perfect example.
More than anything, we need to remove the support structure that protects them.
One alternative is from ancient Greece: sortition. Instead of elections, certain positions have a kind of lottery that randomly selects the person for the position. If psychopaths are drawn to power, then randomly picking someone from the general populace will be less likely to result in a psychopath in power.
And honestly, I'd prefer randos to politicians for most things in life, not just government
True about culling the good ones. I think we need mandatory time outs instead of complete limits. Like, serve two terms, then can't run for any office for two years. No office can be held for more than four terms. This would break up the inertia effect that keeps a district voting for the same people over and over, and the forever campaigning mode they get in.
Term limits enable NEW 'few good' in.
AND force the corruptive elements to work harder buying new criminals.
We will never get good politicians because anyone that has ethics is already unelectable. What should be the backbone is considered a weakness. Moreso, these bastards are bought and paid for 5 years before they even consider running. Which is why the term limits are the best rebuttal. If we can make it cost prohibitive to push someone to endorse bullshit agendas, that is absolutely a good thing. There's no way this lobbyist money gets applied the same if they can't guarantee 20+ years if control. At the very least, we make it more expensive for short term benefit. If it weeds out the few good, it will take a tsunami of bad along with them. Fuck them all to death!
