You are quite correct. Mr. Rich is wearing clothing that is patriotic, but it is not made out of a US flag, or parts of it. Starry? Yes. Stripy? Yes. Actual flag? Not so much.

I think it depends on one's fabric/sewing/flag knowledge level. If your Daddy had spent a wee bit of time in the garment industry, I'm sure he would have reacted differently. Sorry.
