And his wife died in an "accident". How come I get the feeling this has been going on for decades with Joe?

According to friends of his late wife, she started drinking when she found out about Joe's affair with the "babysitter." And she was drinking when she had the accident that killed her and their young daughter. Joe blamed it on a truck driver, but it was really his late wife who caused it.
