Why is a defective eye worth more? Is it because they are so wide eyed? Are missing lenses, or cornea worth more, or just the missing lids that make the eyes look huge?
Maybe people with that defect see things normal people wouldn't. Kind of like a filter. So when they start bringing their monster out, she produces more adrenochrome or they use less effort to get her scared. Cats have irises that look like that and they see better in the dark.
Her eye made her valuable to the dark side. She had a rare (1 in 10,000) condition called Coloboma.
