I need to study history more, but I don't quite understand the right of the union to engage in the war, since wasn't seceding from the union legal (and still is)? One question I have had for a long time is, if there had been no civil war, how long would slavery have continued in the south? I think global boycotting of the south would have occurred, forcing slavery to end, but how much later? Would the south have eventually re-joined the union? What would the U.S. be like today if there had never been a civil war? Any thoughts on these questions would be appreciated.
