One of the things I learned from my wife is that women are hit on constantly when they're in public and not with a man. Even while obviously wearing a wedding ring.
I imagine it's kind of annoying, and they are basically forced to find some way to filter out the onslaught in the short term. That makes things like height, weight, clothes, signs of wealth about the only means they can use without spending all of their time "getting to know" every random dude that approaches them. And, generally speaking, guys that hit on anything with a pulse make up the bulk of those hitting on women, so they get a skewed perspective of the men that are out there.
It's a numbers game.
I think, unfortunately, too many women internalize the short-term filters to the point that nobody else gets a chance. So when alternate ways of meeting men present themselves - like recommendations of friends, or even online dating - they leave those same short-term filters up even when they should maybe lower their shields a bit.
