I believe the last straw for Putin and Russia was when NATO wrecked Libya and killed Gadaffi. NATO had become an instrument of war, not a defensive pact. I think it was then that Russia put their preparedness for dealing with U.S. - NATO into hyperdrive. And this preparedness has allowed the success we are now seeing in Ukraine.
