If you really want to see how bizarre some can get, try looking in journals that allow authors to publish for a fee, like Frontiers in Psychology. Not saying it's all bad, in fact there can be good studies that are shut out of mainstream journals.
Many of these trials will of course go nowhere and never be published, but you can see the scope of effort. The studies people have mentioned are from psychology. That's a vast field. Imo the colder, darker studies would be under "marketing." This includes propaganda.
