Here's the Electoral College Members from Michigan. They were pledged to Joe Biden. That's the problem.
The alternate elector mess is because Trump and his people decided to claim they had legitimate electors WITHOUT actually changing the election results. They did not win their court cases, so they did not have legitimate electors in these states. They then convinced these folks to say they were "duly elected" this is the basis for the fraud in MI.
In two states, PA and NM, they electors themselves realized they couldn't sign the documents they Trump team asked them to sign because it would open them up to to exactly this type of case. They signed the documents, but they added language saying they would only go along if the courts overturned the results in their state.
The alternate elector certificates for Pennsylvania and New Mexico contained language indicating they would take effect only if the Trump campaign's challenges to the election results were sustained by the courts; but "alternate" certificates from the other five states contained no indication that they were not genuine.
There's even emails where lawyers on the Trump campaign say "their votes aren't legal under federal law." It's going to be a giant mess.
There's an investigation in at least two other states, AZ and GA as well as a federal investigation at well. Several of the electors have gotten immunity for their testimony and testified to grand juries (I think at least two grand juries.)
