Your brain and body are like tools that allows your consciousness to interact in this world. You are spirit. Psychedelic drugs alter your mind/body in a way that allows your spirit to "travel" to different places, sometimes within the body and sometimes out of body. Dependent on dose.

This is all personal speculation but many psychedelic philosophers have touched on the topic.

If adrenochrome is as evil as I believe, it could allow an entity from another realm to hijack your mind/body for the duration of the high. It would explain why they can't stop taking it.
