In some ways Lemmy us similar to reddit and got a bunch of reddit users mods and subs that quit during the api protest. So Lemmy is a server or instanxe similar to how reddit is a website, and lemmy like reddit has tons of subs, growing everyday, and you can cewate your own as well. So really the places to hang out are where your interests are.
Mastadon you can think of like a portal or software to access, similar to connect for lemmy, to the various instances/sites on the fediverse. The fediverse is the platform, distributed and decentralized.
There is a large lefty presence on the platform, but lemmy doesnt have much and its mostly geeky stuff, reddit exiles (the smarter redditors) and generally interesting or obscure content.
