I was coming here to mention this movie. It's one of my favorite movies of all time and explains why so many Irish people hate Catholicism. There were hundreds of thousands of teenage girls and young women stuffed into these asylums over the years, physically and sexually abused by nuns and priests. They were slaves.
I was just a kid when Sinead O'Connor went on SNL, and I didn't really get the significance of what she did. I just knew everyone said it was bad. In retrospect, she was brave and ahead of her time.
That movie haunts me to this day. I saw it with my mother many years ago thinking it was going to be a comedy. Needless to say, I was in for a real horrifying shock.
