I know some people think term limits will save us from ourselves, but it won't change a thing.
I like the idea if we find someone we like in office we should have the choice to keep them as long as we want. The Founders never added term limits I believe for several reasons.
I think they didn't add them because they added mechanisms to get office holders out: they are called elections. Also, I think institutional knowledge is good if those we hire to govern us at any level are competent and honest.
Imagine this. Pretend we didn't have term limits for President. Imagine if Ronald Reagan had a third term. Maybe we'd never would have to put up with the Bush junta at the Presidential level. If Clinton had a third term maybe 911 would have never happened or at least the Iraq war maybe wouldn't have happened. Maybe we'd still would have balanced budgets and paid down the debt even more.
I think the idea of term limits is lazy. I think it is a cop-out and dangerous. If we find someone good we should be able to keep them.
Term limits will affect Trump if he returns. One and done this time. I just think Presidential term limits are wrong, and I don't see the states limiting their ability to term limit senators either and for good reason. Maybe we should go back to the states appointing the senators instead.
That is my two cents worth.
Jefferson wanted term limits, until the Civil War congress at least followed Washington's example. 90percent of all congressmen each term were freshmen. people would do their civic duty and serve as a congressman for a term. with term limits there should be no passing of a seat to a family member in event of a death. and yes, the Senate should go back to the states.
