Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
If you know you know! Nothing better than summertime. Tomato sandwiches, boiled peanuts and watermelon. Just had my first boiled peanut of the season. This article says "fall" and that's how I grew up eating in the chilly fall. Farmers got smart and started planting peanuts early for the locals to buy. Probably because so many people were stealing them out of the fields. Western NC boiled peanuts are different and I'm not a fan. In Charleston SC they have them available year round for tourists. They are boiling green peanuts and it's not the same when you are used to soft green peanuts. FYI: peanuts grow in the ground not trees. I've met people that didn't know this.

I'm kinda the same way. Always want to know how things work and other shit most people don't care about. I think not knowing about how plants grow fifty years ago was more common than now. I remember a new girl in school from I think Tennessee and she didn't know peanuts grow in the ground. Years ago I watched Dolly Parton's series about her life and I blasted on the facebook page they were not growing tobacco in the show. I really thought they had screwed up. See it all the time, show based at southern beaches with mountains in background. NCIS is supposed to be in DC and mountains in background. Turns out the tobacco grown in Tennessee looks much different than North Carolina tobacco.
Thats why peanuts are also called groundnut
I don't think I've ever heard peanuts referred to groundnut but it makes sense.
When I first came to US, and I first heard the word Peanut, I had no idea what it was and the word sounded so rude I was shocked! 🤣
I get it but it's hilarious to a girl that grew up with peanut fields almost out my back door. I can see how it might sound vulgar considering another name for male body parts is nuts🤣 The link has a photo of a peanut field. Deer love them as much as humans.

I've only had artichokes from a jar. I cook them sometimes. I should learn to cook when in season. Can't go wrong with butter. It's so expensive but I keep buying it. Every time I go to the store I get a box.
