From Trump's own attorney, he has never had that ability before. So I am not understanding the "why this time" part.

It can't be further simplified so here's an analogy:

a. Wife never went to a hockey game with me before, despite numerous invites.

b. Finally, this season, she agreed to go to a game.

c. Why this time, and not the other times?

Now Trump:

a. He's never had the ability before to subpoena.

b. Finally, this time, he will have that ability.

c. Why this time, and not the other times?

The courts all rejected his 2020 election law suits when he brought them. He’s never had the opportunity. Now the feds are coming to him.
