Socialists and leftists always try and claim Star Trek and think the Federation is their idea of a socialist utopia. Now to be fair I'd be surprised if many of the people behind the show weren't total lefties, however what they created in the Federation is more centrist if anything than socialist. There are many instances where they genuinely respect the sovereignty of planets that choose not to join the Federation, something a socialist regime would simply not do in real life given that level of power and control.
