Funny you asked … true story: I was living in Las Vegas when Countrywide Mortgage went tits up. A lady in our subdivision had her loan through them. She freaked out when they closed their doors. Turns out, her mortgage docs vanished. She hired a lawyer to cover herself. Turns out, the lawyer was able to argue she was free and clear since there was ZERO proof she was indebted in any way. The judge applied the “possession is 9/10ths law” … free house.

My dad had a motorcycle loan, lender went tits up, and he couldn't find anyone to pay. Crazy part is he was never able to either title it or register at dmv. He just uses it on camping trips now.
