The kiawe forests of the Kohala coast that are mainly rooted in old lava fields are desert-ish. There are "forest" fires that run through them every few years. This is what was affected near the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in southern Kohala on the Big Island.
I've never heard of "wildfires" in Hawaii. It's a lush tropical paradise.
