Here in Maine, a few years back we had a large storm in the fall that destroyed a large portion of the power lines all over the state. I live about 10 minutes outside of Augusta and I was without power for 6 days. To the best of my knowledge there were no accompanying wildfires of natural disaster proportions. (and i did take some time and drive around a bit during this time just out of curiosity and boredom) So this seems pretty dubious for an explanation of several wildfires starting simultaneously.
