Ellison bought it from Meg Whitman or some eBay ceo before that. Lots of rich people have been consolidating down Lanai in to a couple owners for years. Going all the way back to the Robinson family and even the Mormon church.

All the laborers to build lanai take the shuttle from Lahaina. Other than construction no one really commutes.
