Let's first think this out, though. I agree that it seems nefarious but we first need to ascertain that the skipped houses were made of the same material as the ones burnt to a crisp. Old dry wood that has had the sun beating on it for years burns a lot faster than houses made or poured cement, And yes, the wealthy are more likely to make their houses out of materials less likely to burn.
There are just so many variables. Wind direction / speed, distance between objects, heat of the fire in a particular area, and building material as you point out. The end result defies simple logic.
