Is anyone here old enough to remember if the police always got involved in separating out protest groups?
The concept always rubbed me the wrong way and intuitively it doesn't pass legal muster (it excludes persons from protesting whose views are in the middle).
I think it's a highly counterproductive concept because it prohibits protestors from talking and reaching understanding. I'd rather see officers in plain clothes among the crowd and reacting quickly the minute things got physical. The amount of open harassment they've allowed since Trump came into office is horrifying.
Re-establish the precedent that free speech is sacrosanct and we are expected to peacefully co-exist in public spaces.
If two people are fighting, you first separate them to stop the violence. After they are separated it's easy to see who is still being aggressive. If they are groups, do the same thing if you can. Obviously can be more difficult with groups, but it's the best option.
But this was easy. One group was blocking the other as it matched to a scheduled time and place. And the same group was the only one that defied the officers' orders.
I think it's just that violence has not been typical of political groups in the last few decades, until now. So you're seeing it now when you didn't see it before.
