The distance between Lahaina, Maui and the coast of the island of Lanai is 8.9 miles. The 'hurricane' winds were blowing towards the sea, toward Lanai, not inland. And according to the survivor above, the winds carried them away from the shoreline.
"The fire that destroyed the town of Lahaina on the island of Maui spread at a rate of “one mile every minute,” Hawaii Gov. Josh Green (D) said. The rapid spread was in large part due to wind gusts of up to 81 miles per hour, he said in a video statement released Sunday afternoon local time."
