How in the hell do the winds from a storm hundreds of miles offshore blow away from the island towards the ocean?! Saw video showing smoke blowing inland.
Depends on which side of the island you’re on. Wind enters one side, exits the other side. Where the wind is coming from dictates where it will enter and exit.
Lahaina is on the western south side of the island. The tropical depression/storm was south of Maui in the Pacific ocean. Makes no sense to me.
storms rotate counterclockwise in northern hemisphere, which would make the winds blow from east to west (offshore) on Lahaina if a storm is to the south. What I find amazing is that the wind would be so strong with the storm so far away. That must be due to the topography, because the winds of tropical systems drop off pretty fast when more than a 100 miles from a storm center. The hurricane that passed south of Lahaina was around 500 miles away, too far to have even moderate wind effects! It's interesting that even WaPo has doubts about the hurricane winds did it story: https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2023/08/10/hawaii-fires-science-hurricane-winds/
