I'm very surprised they haven't been banned, since it's the kind of book they don't want anyone reading because you are absolutely right, these books would wake people up to what communism is really like. Where my husband went to college (Oglethorpe U) it was required reading for everyone as part of their core curriculum. That was 20 years ago though, not sure if they still have it on the syllabus.
I read it in high school and again 5 or 10 years ago. But that would have been in about 82.
In 1978, I was walking down Patission in Athens and there, right in front of me, by himself, was Solzhenitsyn sitting at a table in an outdoor cafe. The thing that struck me that I never forgot was he was extremely depressed. I could just tell. I learned later from an interview he did at that time it was because the West completely ignored his warnings.
