From experience of being a 'tourist' in struggling third-world countries: My advice, after packing your bag with milk and diapers for the flight over, is to hire a guide with a car, or a motorbike, and support his family, paid daily, for a good while. Remember to buy them lunch at their aunties bread stall and give the coconut-milk guy some money, and send the guide home every night with plenty meat or fish for the family. So, special trips to a local fishing village, or something like that. Also, pay them well for their services, and get them to show you the real Maui. Maybe surfers can go early before the season starts? Now is the true time of Aloha.
