I think people rejecting the lies and uncovering the truth is getting to him. Guys like him think they are superior to everyone else (despite their lack of true morals) and look down on the regular citizens. He likely didn't think they would be ever questioned or found out, or even labeled a corrupt traitor in his waning years with the sewer swamp government
