Mid-term, I think a senator would be appointed by the governor. So Newsome could appoint her for the rest of Feinstein's term if Feinstein were to abdicate.

Bonus points for the movie if Kamala can somehow get a Senate vote in Feinstein's place and use her VP tiebreaker vote to confirm Newsome as next VP.
