Every thing from the kitchen and yard goes in it and is broken down over time, creating a rich compst that we put on the bed. Plus the straw decomposes in place. Every once in a while we add manure and bone meal. Really we should do that more often.
As for bugs you have them no matter what you do. I swear there is a hot line telling all the bugs with in miles. You have to deal with them with anything you grow.
