I've always questioned the whole "calls from the planes" part of the stories from that day. I didn't think cell phones worked when up in the air on jets, at least not back in 2001. Can anyone provide a reasonable explanation of how it could have been possible back then?

mehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i really don't think calls would have been possible...
from here https://nitter.net/PunishDem1776/status/1699164020694012052 there's a part:
For those “calls” to exist in 2001 at an average of 30k feet would be practically impossible since it would have to immediately jump from one service connector to another at rapid speeds without losing the call.......
and:
ames Fetzer did a brilliant breakdown of No Planes, BlueBeam, FBI placing evidence, the failure of cell phone calls, and so much more
The thread has links to go with both parts.
Yeah that's the real problem. Cell towers have a fairly long range but at 40,000 feet and moving at 500MPH the phone would quickly get confused from all the hopping between towers so rapidly.
